FOR TOTAL BODY WELLNESS

How our program works

Brain Gym is a series of sessions that are eight weeks in length and consist of two classes per week. Each class is divided into two parts, brain exercise and physical exercise. Brain exercises are completed online and on paper in the classroom. Class members work at their individual level and move at their own pace under the supervision of the instructor. 


 We make physical exercise fun with low-impact, low-stress workouts such as chair yoga, chair Tai Chi, and chair aerobic exercises, chair dancing, and wheelchair workouts. 


GETTING STARTED

The first step is to take the Brain Gym initial assessment that tells us what areas of cognition need work. There will be a new assessment at the end of every completed eight-week session. 


To benefit most from Brain Gym, we ask you to commit to full sessions. Individual classes are not recommended as it will likely take at least six to eight weeks using the prescribed curriculum of brain and physical exercise to begin to see an improvement in cognition, mood, or physical ability.

Executive Functions Exercises

Memory Exercises

Auditory Exercises

  • Recognizing sounds from different animals and instruments   
  • Recalling information shared in a voicemail   
  • Accurately pairing sounds with their producer

Language Exercises

Strategies Worked on  

  • Recalling words from one’s vocabulary   
  • Remembering items on a list   
  • Using semantic knowledge to recall, place, and identify words   
  • Using words correctly in a sentence

Visual and Spatial Exercises

Strategies Worked on  

  • Mentally rotating objects   
  • Perceiving objects in non-traditional orientations   
  • Separating parts of a whole   Distinguishing orientations of objects in physical space

Visual Attention Exercises

Strategies Worked on   

  • Accurately recalling a sequence of events   
  • Remembering and recognizing objects previously viewed   
  • Extracting, recognizing, and utilizing visual patterns in moving stimuli  


FOR THE BODY

Gentle Yoga

Performed at a slower pace, with less intense positions, and includes extended time for meditation, yogic breath work, and relaxation.

Light Stretching

This gentle stretching workout will help improve your flexibility, circulation, posture and relieve stress.

Balance

Balancing exercises work your core muscles, lower back, and legs. Lower-body strength-training exercises can also help improve your balance and help prevent falls.
